Vehicle Restraint Systems (VRS) are a major factor in road safety as these passive safety systems have the purpose to reduce risks and increase road safety. They protect the vehicle from deviating off the lane and minimize the effects of accidents. To be implemented in Europe, VRS must meet the requirements of the European Norm EN 1317. The EN 1317 sets the highest international standards and ensures the uniformity of testing conditions. The Vehicle Restraint Systems have to successfully pass crash tests, whose parameters and acceptance criteria are defined by this norm. All DELTABLOC® safety barriers are tested with reputable, accredited and certified testing institutes and over 320 successful crash test prove that we are the number one in road safety.
The 3 main criteria of the EN 1317 are: Containment level, Working width and Impact severity.

Containment level

Restraint systems are classified by containment levels
EN 1317 classifies Vehicle Restraint Systems by containment levels which express the ability of a system to hold back vehicles. The containment level is determined with up to three crash tests where a defined weight, speed and impact angle for a test vehicle is set. Crash tests are conducted at accredited and certified test institutes only. Containment levels are specified from the lowest (T1) for temporary safety barriers to the highest (H4b) with very high containment.

Working width

Required space for the Vehicle Restraint System
The working width W is a measure of the deformation of the barrier after impact and one of the most important specifications for Vehicle Restraint Systems. It measures the space required behind the barrier in order for the system to function properly on vehicle impact. Working width is calculated as the distance between the front side of the undeformed barrier and the rearmost part of the deformed barrier after impact. It is divided into 8 classes from W1 to W8.

Impact severity

Passenger protection
The impact severity level (ASI) is an index that assesses the risk of injury to the occupants of a passenger car during an impact against a Vehicle Restraint System. It is exclusively associated with injury risks to vehicle passengers and assumes that different severity levels correspond to different levels of injury. The EN 1317 defines three levels - A, B and C. Level A indicates higher safety for vehicle passengers than level B, and B a higher safety than level C.
